Have you tried googling for ubuntu conversion from XP? I'll bet there is a lot of information out there.

If you get stuck getting it to work, try googling.

This of course assumes you have a working PC with web access, while converting. :-)

Ubuntu uses the (default) ext 3 file system, mags could either a, resize his HDD partition and keep xp and ubuntu on separate ones or format ubuntu entirely, Of course he would have to have room for swap and boot

Btw, XP uses NTFS and or FAT32

I wub u guise [nohomo] wub.gif

but srsly I thought about just doing install this way;
1) reformatting both my hard drives so they blank
and then
2) booting up with the Ubuntu CD and installing that way?
3) then when ubuntu up, reinstalling my saved data off external HD.

Can this be done?
I totally wana wipe any traces of my [illegal] XP history, including MS partitions ph34r.gif (and horsie pr0n) ph34r.gif

use the live CD, "Try Ubuntu" then when it loads install and use all of the disk. Be sure you unplug your external before you using the live cd or you might coincidently format your external (happened to me before)

lol synth, sounds painfull, but yes ExtrnlHD is always unplugged till i need it wink.gif

another Q!!

After checking to see backup to E-HD, I notice that its just 1 icon saying 'Backup' and not a direct copy of how my C:Drive is laid out...will Ubuntu recognise the backup icon (which was done thru WindowsXP) and initialise it when i needs to do it?

smile.gif

Sowwie for nub questions!

Different file format,

You need to make sure its in a folder, the new ubuntu can migrate your my docs folder but any other stuff you need to place into a folder before you install ubuntu

lol. I've never bought a machine that came with Windows. All mine were built from scratch, after my first two. (The first two were in 1987 and 1992, and came with a Commodore OS and DOS 4, respectively.) All my machines after that were built from scratch, and I had to install Windows (3.1, NT, 95, 2000, XP) myself. (And all of those machines ran Linux after I replaced them as my primary Windows machine.)

In my home I have 3 Linux machines, and 3 Windows machines.
